“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”-Isaiah 30:21
Walking in the LORD’s way is always an interesting journey. Even when we don’t know where we are or even where we’re going, He never fails to guide us into what is best. Though I’ve often been confused, ignorant and sometimes walking contrary to the path He has set for me, He has never stopped lighting my way. It’s just that at times, I wasn’t looking for the light.
It’s only by His leading that I’ve come to the University of Mobile. Throughout my teenage years, I had plenty of ideas about where I wanted to attend college, which varied from Oxford to Israel to Juilliard. A small private school close to my home definitely was not on my radar, yet our God has a wonderful sense of humor. Various different schools offered me substantial scholarships but I was not at peace about accepting them. After finishing high school almost 2 years in advance, I enrolled part-time at a large public university, where I enjoyed but quickly became weary of the intellectual mission field. Obviously, it was not the place for me.
My older brother assisted me greatly in my decision to attend the University of Mobile. (This brother, might I add, is the most intelligent, charismatic, good looking and highly esteemed young man ever to grace the presence of mankind; so if you don’t know Jason, then you should because he will change your life. And no, he did not pay me to say that, I’m just a little biased.) Throughout his freshman year there, he took me under his wing and invited me to come stay with him on the weekends. I fell in love with the friendly, Christ-centered atmosphere of the campus and as the year went on, the more the University began to feel like home to me.
After much prayer and humility, our Abba flooded my spirit with peace about my decision to follow His will in attending UM as an English major with a Music minor. I wish I could capture the looks of terror cast upon me when I express my desire to study English. These looks of terror are often paired with a delayed gasp and an aghast, “but why would you do such a thing?” Fear not, I do recognize the pros and cons of this field of study. The primary con is that my grammar and spelling are now under constant scrutiny, so if this offends you, I apologize. In contrast, I am fond of old literature and writing papers with footnotes brings me a wonderful sense of satisfaction. If that’s not enough, then the more exciting reason is that our wonderful God has called me to the overseas mission field to share the gospel through teaching English as a second language. There is absolutely nothing that I would rather do with my life, so there – that’s why I would do such a thing.
I cannot express how excited I am about attending UM! My expectations for my time here are high and still growing. I expect to thrive academically, relationally and especially spiritually. Our God has great things in store for us, and as long as we look for the Light, He will continue to lead us into acres of hope . . .
Shalom!
