Dear God,

julisa09

Thank you for the beautiful weather you’ve shown to us this past week!  Thank you for the sunshine, the breeze, and the cool nights.  You’ve been gracious enough to let us enjoy the first week of fall.  I also want to thank you for the rain that is coming.  I know the earth needs it, because it has been sunny all week with no moisture to water the ground.  God, you’re indescribable!  And I love you!  I love the way you talk so sweetly into our ears even when we don’t hear you sometimes.  I love how you embrace us when we don’t even embrace others.  I love it when you put us in our place when we ask you to do something and we don’t believe you can do it.  I love what you can and won’t do, because you didn’t make us to please us.  We were made to worship, adore, and love you, our Creator.  I love where you take us to share your love to others.  I love why you love us the way you do!  Like I said before, you’re indescribable God, and I just wanted to dedicate a blog to you to let you know how much I adore and love you even when I don’t show it to you and to others!  You’ve allowed me to blog for three years, and I’m grateful!  I love you God!

What A Shocking Weekend!

julisa09

This is going to be kinda long…be prepared…ha ha ha!  :D

–Friday aka Preview Day–

I thought the day went well.  I got the opportunity to visit Oakdale, the education building by escorting some potential education majors there.  The girls were pretty sweet.  I made them late going back to Weaver though…my bad!  I was a little confused during the browse section of the day.  I didn’t really get to talk about CAB to any of the preview students, and I’m not the kind of person that would just grab someone I don’t know and force them to listen to me.  That’s just me; I don’t have that blessing.  The CPA did great lifting up the name of Jesus and showcasing their talents.

Movie night, I believe, was a success.  Before the movie, while we were setting up, I got shocked.  My stupid self, after plugging in the popcorn machine, decided to poke my finger around in the light bulb area to find a light bulb, well to shorten the story, I got shocked.  It left a red, curved mark on my right arm (its gone now).  Other than that, the movie Up was great; such a cute movie.  I honestly wasn’t expecting it to be as funny and serious as it was.  Great choice Anna (fellow CAB teammate)!  I ended the night eating a 6-inch Chicken Teryaki sandwich from Subway watching Soul Food with my preview students.

–Saturday–

Shelley and I went shopping from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  It was great.  We went to Old Navy, Bel-Aire Mall, Ross, and Wal-Mart.  I was shopping for jeans because I have four pairs of jeans that either have a hold in it or has been cut because there was a hole in it.  I found some jeans at Ross.  I also found two dresses, but didn’t have the money for it right now (jeans were the priority!!).  Came back to school and ate in the Cafeteria (mmm Mushroom Ravioli).  Yummy!  Then I made Monkey Bread (which I got the recipe from Mrs. Heddrick).  After making that, some friends and I watched Mighty Morphing Power Rangers and then Shelley and I watched the Breakfast Club. It was great!  We basically made fun of both movies.  :D

–Sunday–

Pancake Breakfast……one word……DELICIOUS!!  It was great!  The message was hard hitting too.  I don’t think the church wanted to hear what the preacher said.  I think it was necessary to be taught, but not at someone else’s church.  That’s just like a preacher coming to someone’s church saying that they don’t pay tithes and offering when the preacher is only a guest….I’m just saying!  It was just my opinion.  I honestly think the church should have gone to the revival with the pastor…Anyway, the rest of the day was good. I went to work the last week on Phonathon.  It was a good night.  I didn’t get a single donation, but I talked to some great people.

Overall my weekend was great!  Fall Break is coming up soon….are you ready?

Sunday: A day of rest?

hannah09

Just finishing lunch, I am full of caf food and ready to sleep comfortably in my bed for a few hours on this cloudy Sunday. After all, that’s what Sunday afternoons are all about right? Well, not today. I am instead, forcing myself to keep my eyes open while I read the exciting adventures of the Odyssey. Why do I procrastinate and torture myself like this?

This weekend was really great. My best friend from home came to visit me on Friday. She experienced the real life of a UM student going to Steak-n-shake at 2 in the morning. On Saturday we traveled to Orange Beach and relaxed under the beautiful sun by the gulf waves–the weather was perfect! (In fact, the weather this entire week has been great! Fall is finally here!!) It was really great to hang out with her and introduce her to all my new friends here. I think she enjoyed the U of M.

This morning I experienced my first opportunity to serve at Cottage Hill church. I worked the extended session with three year olds, which probably is the main reason I’m having trouble keeping my eyes open right now. It was neat to get involved in an area besides the college ministry. Hopefully it will open up some doors for babysitting as well!

I am off to the committed study of the Odyssey. I am determined to stay awake!

God Bless you today!

A Search for Excitement, Tribes, and Laundry with a Mind of Its Own

amy09

It didn’t rain yesterday for the first time in recent memory. My rain boots are bored.

But I’m not, because college won’t let me. I overcame the week of excessive exams relatively painlessly and I even obtained eight and a half hours of sleep last night. Thank you, I shall take a bow.

On this particular morning, I am blogging solely because I am waiting on My UM to wake up so I can submit my homework. I know, My UM, sometimes I’m lazy in the mornings  too, but today you are without excuse. Perhaps it’s going on strike . . . I hope not, because my homework is due.

Anyway, I know that there is nothing particularly riveting about my academic affairs, so allow me to ponder the existence of excitement in my life. On Saturday, I woke up (thankfully) and proceeded to read Tribes by Seth Godin for the majority of the day. Nothing like a good dose of business leadership to make your Saturday an exciting one. And, I did laundry, and the dryer texted me when my clothes were dry. That’s exciting, right? The new David Crowder album released on Tuesday, for which I woke up excessively early so I could download and listen to it before class began. 48 hours later, I have listened to said album 7 and a half times and it has yet to grow dull.

Hey look, my UM woke up. I think that wins the excitement award for the morning.

Anyway, thanks for reading – when I find some excitement, I’ll let you know. Until then,

I love college.

Who Brings a Water Gun to Battle?

julisa09

….so, I’m running around the Quileute Werewolves from Twilight (mostly Sam Uley).  All of a sudden I’m with Jacob Black and we’re talking until Edward shows up.  Jacob and Edward get into an argument and Edward shows off a scar that he received from Jacob.  They start fighting and I end up in a desert next to Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum (Independence Day).  There were preparing to go check out an alien ship that had crashed in the desert.  I say something and then Will Smith says the same thing.  I sigh and then I end up in a cave with a bunch of troops armed for battle.  We see a Tyrannosaurus Rex heading towards a group of people on the ground.  I’m panicking because I know we need to do something, but my commander was being an idiot.  So, I beat him up and kick him into a tunnel which lead to the ground where the dinosaur is and I pick up a gun.  I aim the gun towards the T-Rex’s head and try to pull the trigger, but it doesn’t shoot.  So, I unlock the gun and I aim again.  This time as I pulled the trigger…water came out!  I was hot.  I went to the second in command who was a female and asked her “who brings a water gun to battle?” and she as well as all the other troops around me laugh.  This made me angrier so I started shooting them all with my water gun.  Then the dinosaur came into the cave where we were because I had aggravated him with the water, that’s when I woke up.

Weird dream…I know…I just thought I would share it with my readers.  My friend, Keri, told me that I made her night when I told her my dream.  She suggested that I write this blog.  She also got a revelation out of my dream.  She said that we should stop trying to defeat the devil with a water gun since we have a water hose (Jesus) behind us.  I was like “Wow!  That’s deep and so true!”  So there you have it.  If you are going through something, just remember a few things:  (1) You are not the only one going through something  (2) The battle is not yours, it’s the Lord’s; stop trying to fight the devil with a water gun, use the water hose  (3) You have not, because you ask not; ask God to help, and He will  (4) There’s always hope in a storm.

I know…I’m a witness!  Have a great week!

Beach, relaxation, and rest

hannah09

Today marks my first time at the beach since I’ve been in Mobile! My friend, Anna, and I left on a road trip to Gulf Shores this morning. I’m pretty sure I’m probably the last person to go to the beach since school started because people go almost every weekend. It was very fun and relaxing. Of course seafood is always a plus. It was a good way to end a busy, crazy week.

Other than the beach, this weekend has been pretty uneventful. It’s nice just to chill with friends and watch movies. I have found something interesting about college…weeks are actually more exciting than weekends. While in high school, everyone is pumped about the weekends. Not that weekends are dreadful here, but I think it’s just because weeks are more busy and eventful. Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely nice to have a time to rest and relax.

I hope everyone has a great rest of the weekend.

Bipolar Atmospheric Tendencies, Chainsaw Training and a Clifford Band-Aid

amy09

Yesterday, the sun came out and remained in our presence for more than 2.5 hours. I am shocked and slightly perturbed. These bipolar atmospheric tendencies are really not helping anyone (except for my polka-dot rain boots).

So, funny story. I’m in a Golf class this semester. (I shall pause for comedic effect … okay, stop laughing at me). Due to my lifelong aversion to athletic activity, I accidentally ended up in this class due to a last minute-need for more hours (long story). But anyway, I hit the ball last week, which I consider a significant accomplishment. In addition to hitting the ball, I managed to hit the best shot of my life as soon as the instructor turned to look. Unfortunately, I was unable to repeat the phenomenon and missed the next 12 swings and obtained a large blister on my right pointer finger. (But now, I have a Clifford band-aid upon the aforementioned blister, so therefore, all is well). Yes folks, this athletic disability of mine is why I am attending this institution on an academic scholarship. (You may now resume your laughter, I shall not be offended).

In addition to the other frivolities, I have also been trained in Disaster Relief this semester. Though I was more than a tad disappointed that I didn’t get to use a chainsaw, I earned a retinal-damage-inducing yellow hat which I shall don proudly the next time a crisis rolls around. Fret not, though I am unlicensed to wield a chainsaw, I am trained, ready and willing to do the paperwork the next time a hurricane blows through.

Oh, and I used Germ-X 13 times last Friday. I think I have a problem.

I suppose this completes the summation of recent developments.

I love college.

Another rainy day

hannah09

Why do shorter weeks always seem much longer in the end? Last week went by extremely slow and quite miserably. It might be because I was looking forward to this past weekend so much! Impact left Friday afternoon for Montgomery to go on a retreat. It was a long weekend filled with singing, bonding, laughing, and more singing. I feel like I know everyone a lot better now. After singing for 12 hours on Saturday, we finished our retreat with a concert on Sunday afternoon. Needless to say, my voice is in need of severe rest.

I am now back to the reality of classes and schoolwork. It’s Monday, and therefore a slow, tiring, and rainy day. I am starting a new job here on campus this afternoon, working for the admissions office. It will be nice to earn a little extra cash for groceries and such. My schedule is filling up quickly, and the school year is moving fast. I can’t believe it will be October soon! It seems like I just graduated from high school. I can already tell that college is going to fly by. So anyways, I’m off to finish up some schoolwork before work. God bless

Born to be wild

adam09

So over Labor Day weekend I took a road trip with my friends Elle, Starcher, and Melissa to Wake Forest, North Carolina. Several of UM’s best alumni, including my awesome sister, attend grad school at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. We planned on leaving Mobile around noon on Friday, which worked out just fine. I think we pulled off campus around 12:20. Not bad. The first few hours of the drive were lovely. Melissa, one of the coolest people I know (by the way, she and Elle LOVE McDonald’s Double Cheeseburgers. When I found that out, I knew that those girls were awesome) drove all the way to Atlanta. We were in her car, so it only made sense to let her drive first. By the way, her car is awesome.

Well Atlanta, as many of you know, is a rather large city with a high volume of vehicles. That fact makes rush hour quite the endeavor, as we discovered that day. I’m talking bumper to bumper traffic all the way through the city. We stayed in that for about 45 minutes or so (maybe longer), and then stopped to get gas. I took the proverbial wheel at that point, and slowly (literally) eased my way back onto the interstate. Traffic had not gotten any better. In fact, it may have been worse by that point. I’m not really sure. What I do know is that one of our passengers began to experience intense motion sickness. That, coupled with a bad headache, caused a less than desired reaction in her stomach. We were only going about 20 miles per hour at this point, so she leaned out the window and ‘coughed’. All I heard was a cough anyway. I thought to myself, “I’m glad she didn’t throw up.” Well, as it turns out, when some people cough, they are actually throwing up. She came back into the car and said, “Yeah, it’s all over the side of the car.”

Needless to say, we took the next exit. We found a Chick-fil-a and pulled in. Three of us grabbed dinner. One of us did not. We sat there in that booth and discussed various remedies for car sickness. I told the tale of ginger snaps being a good thing to munch on in such a case. The girls thought that sounded ridiculous, but seriously, people; it works. Anyway, Melissa and I left the sickly passenger with the other non sickly passenger at the restaurant and we went to find a gas station which a) sold Dramamine, and b) had a car wash. We pulled out Elle’s awesome TomTom and found the closest gas station. Sure enough they had both. We got the medicine, went to the register to pay for it/a car wash, and were tempted to pay for ‘The Works’. Although that particular variety of car wash generally runs $8, we qualified for a discount making it cost only $7. In the end, we went with the ‘Economy Special’, which did the job. As we pulled through that car wash, I couldn’t help but think about the terrifying scene I witnessed in the latest ‘Final Destination’ movie trailer. I told Melissa about the trailer. I think it weirded her out.

Anyway, we eventually found our way back to Chick-fil-a. The sick one was asleep in the booth. The other sat there under the sign for the Winshape Foundation. 15 minutes or so later we were back on the road. By then, the traffic was mostly nonexistent compared to what we had been experiencing. So after what had seemed like 5 hours in Atlanta, we finally got out. And, as it turns out, a lack of rush hour Atlanta traffic, coupled with Dramamine, makes sick people well. The only crazy things that happened the rest of the trip were the obscenely slow speed limits of the Carolinas. To me, when you are going 9 over and you aren’t clearing 70, there’s a problem. Nonetheless, we reached Wake Forest at about 2 in the morning.

The rest of the weekend was amazing, and I will tell you all about it later. God bless!

*By the way, a special ‘thanks’ goes out to my big sister, Lori, for her input on this post.

The Early Bird, Excessive Excessiveness and the Germ-X on the Table

amy09

Hey look, the sun decided to come up today. Apparently college is turning me into an early bird … I have yet to decide whether this is a blessing or a curse.

But I did not neglect the pastime of excessive sleep throughout Labor Day weekend. Neither did I neglect the pastime of excessive homework, nor excessive consumption of the ice cream in the freezer. Thanks, Mom. (And thanks Dad for not consuming said ice cream before I did. Thanks also for not getting offended when I mention Mom in the blog without mentioning you. You’re a real trooper :) ).

Speaking of excessiveness, I have used more Germ-X in the past month of my life than in the previous 18 years of my life combined. It’s everywhere, and I just can’t pass it up. Though student speculation is that excessive Germ-X use produces mutant germs, this is a risk I am willing to take. Can’t catch me, swine flu.

Yet another aspect of excessiveness in my life is the four exams I shall partake in throughout the next week. I know, all this splendidness is just a little too good to be true, but I suppose that’s why I love college.
